The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has successfully shut down an illegal “chop shop” and arrested a convicted felon following an investigation that began with a stolen vehicle recovery.

Detectives from the JSO Auto Crimes Unit initiated their investigation when a victim, who had unknowingly purchased a stolen car from Facebook Marketplace, came forward. This discovery led to a search warrant at the suspect’s home, where authorities uncovered a backyard operation described as a “chop shop.”

According to a JSO release, the search revealed multiple vehicles with removed Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs), several stolen cars, and four catalytic converters. Deputies say the man was taken into custody and is now being held at the Duval County Jail, facing a variety of felony charges.

The JSO highlighted the broader impact of such operations, stating that “chop shops drive up the cost of car repairs, increase insurance rates, and fuel vehicle theft.” The department’s Auto Crimes detectives are dedicated to dismantling these illegal operations to ensure the safety of Duval County residents.

The JSO also issued a public reminder to exercise caution when purchasing vehicles online. The department advises that if a deal appears “too good to be true, it probably is,” and encourages potential buyers to be vigilant to avoid becoming victims of similar schemes.
