VINCheck® Lookup: Free Vehicle History Check

Check Vehicle History Before Buying

VINCheck

NICB's VINCheck allows you to enter a vehicle identification number (VIN) to instantly learn whether the vehicle has been reported as stolen but not recovered or reported as a salvage or flood-damaged vehicle by participating NICB member insurance companies.

This free service takes just seconds and can protect a buyer from a costly mistake. You can conduct a maximum of five searches within a 24-hour period per IP address.

Note: You need to input a correct 17-digit VIN to potentially match against any insurance theft, salvage, or flood records. If the VIN is incorrect, a match record may not be identified.

The NICB VINCheck database is made possible through the cooperation of NICB member insurance companies and represents 92.49%* of the earned insurance premium in the U.S.

VINCheck cross-references the VIN entered against participating insurer’s theft and salvage records. Accordingly, only insurance records appear in response to a VINCheck query and only those records of participating insurers. VINCheck does not query law enforcement records or records of insurance companies that elect not to participate in VINCheck. While VINCheck is a useful free tool, it is not a comprehensive vehicle history report and should not be relied upon when purchasing a vehicle. It is possible that a vehicle could be stolen, seriously damaged, or otherwise have encumbered titles and those records related to those incidents may not appear on a VINCheck report. It is also possible that records retrieved by VINCheck could result in an omission of information. NICB strongly encourages the public to engage in additional due diligence prior to purchasing a vehicle.

What VINCheck Covers

The VINCheck reviews vehicles insured in the United States, plus some motorcycles and watercraft and results depend on the data from participating NICB member companies. While a clean result is not an absolute guarantee, you can gain confidence:

  • Financial protection: avoid unknowingly buying a stolen or salvaged vehicle
  • Safety: vehicles damaged in floods or accidents and then restored can hide unsafe parts that put drivers, passengers, and others at risk
  • Peace of mind before a major purchase

Review VINCheck FAQs

Is NICB VINCheck really free? Yes, NICB offers VINCheck as a free service to help protect consumers and provide information about vehicle histories based on information provided by 92% of the the insurance industry. We do limit searches to five per IP address daily.
How many times can I search a VIN? While VINCheck searches are unlimited over time, we do limit searches to five per IP address daily.
What does a "salvage" result mean? A "salvage" result means an insurance company declared the vehicle a total loss, meaning the cost to repair it exceeded a set percentage of its value leading the company to pay out a claim rather than repairing the vehicle. While the car can still be legally rebuilt and re-titled, the salvage history is worth investigating before you buy.
Does a clean result guarantee the car is safe to buy? A clean result does not guarantee that the vehicle you are searching for has a clean history. VINCheck results are dependent on the information provided by NICB participating companies representing 92.49%* of the earned insurance premium in the U.S.
What's the difference between VINCheck and a full vehicle history report? VINCheck is a free tool that checks a submitted VIN against insurance-reported salvage, flood, and theft records but only from participating NICB insurers. A full vehicle history report (like those listed from partner companies on this page) pulls from a much wider range of sources, including DMV title records, auction data, and service history, providing a more complete picture of the vehicle's past. Most of those reports are provided at a cost.
